Just a short drive away in the market town of Alcester is the home one of the finest and most respected male voice choirs in the region – The Alcester Male Voice Choir.
Founded in 1974 by the current Director of Music, Judith Land, the choir boasts an impressive membership of just over 80 choristers, including several men from Henley and surrounding villages. The choir enjoys an enviable reputation for its varied repertoire and its quality and clarity of delivery when performing at concerts, and the enthusiasm with which it performs.
Concerts are held throughout the year at least once a month helping to raise much needed funds for churches, charities, and societies within the midlands area and beyond. Ambitious plans have recently been announced, for the next three years, for concerts, which are over and above those performed locally, and take in many prestigious venues, such as Worcester and Ely Cathedrals, Town Hall and Symphony Hall (Birmingham), and Cornwall International Choral Festival. In July, this year, the choir embarks on a 5 day concert tour of Brittany.
Judith, who hails from the South Wales valleys said “I grew up with male voice choirs and moved to the midlands to take up teaching at schools in both Alcester & Redditch. It all started in the early 70’s when I ran a school choir, when that finished some of the students Dads asked if they could carry on, and we did, and a new male voice choir was born. The choir’s membership has never been stronger. It is a big commitment and in addition to the regular concerts there is rehearsal every Wednesday evening with optional rehearsals on Mondays. I have deliberately built up community choir, and members come from not just Alcester but from many towns and villages throughout the area. It’s very relaxing, but we do work hard and have a lot of fun along the way. Men interested in joining do not have to go through an audition process, all we ask is that they love singing and are prepared to make that commitment and would like to join a choir that enjoys what it does.”
The new season of repertoire starts on the 16th April, when the choir will be holding its 37th annual Concert at the Greig Hall, Alcester and will be supported by Soprano Helen Swift, vocal entertainer Trevor “T” and special guests the Avon & Somerset Constabulary Male Voice Choir. Tickets for this concert are now on sale at £12 each , and booking forms can be down loaded from the choirs web site www.alcestermvc.org.
